The 20 Day Prayer Challenge: America

Calling all Prayer Warriors!!

I've decided to do another 20 Day Prayer Challenge, like the one I did back in May. This one is very similar to the first one, but I want to do another one focusing on America.

I am a firm believer in prayer, and the impact it can make, and I especially believe in kids praying. I wrote an article about the importance of prayer a while back.

I've been wanting to do a Prayer Challenge for America for a while now. Our nation is a lot better than some other countries, but it still could use a lot of help, especially with the elections coming up. Although I do believe that no matter who is in the office, God will still be on the throne, but we still need to be praying.

Prayer is one weapon that Satan can't fight, and it has a lot of power. I hope that by doing these challenges, more and more people would realize just how much of an impact it can make.

In Philipians 4:6 it says:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Here are some things you can pray for during the 20 Day period:

- That the Americans' hearts would be softened toward God
- That God's will would be done in the upcoming elections
- That God would protect us in whatever lies ahead
- That His hand would be upon our nation
- Anything else God lays upon your heart

The challenge will start in four days, on Thursday, September 11th, and continue for 20 days until the end of this month. You are welcome to share about it on your blogs, and also put the icons on your blog. I've made some new ones for the America theme. The codes are below -- just take out the spaces.

Honey Lemonade, Anyone?

Written by Miss Jocelyn, 17

Who doesn’t just love a cold glass of lemonade? Oh I do! I love it. It’s an easy refreshment and very inexpensive. We don’t ever buy lemonade mixes because, well that’s not really lemonade. Instead we use freshly squeezed lemon juice or lemon juice you can buy in bottles. I went to make some today and we didn’t have any sugar, so I decided I would see how lemonade tasted made with honey.

Let me tell you it tasted excellent. The honey and the lemon juice mixed together gave it a rather tangy taste, instead of just sweetening it. At first it was a little different but it definitely tastes better and is healthier for you in regards to having to use sugar.

I saw one time on a cooking show where a lady used honey to make lemonade. She heated up the water and honey in a pan so the honey would dissolve better. Then she let it cool, added the lemon juice and ice before serving. Sounded weird to me at first, but it’s not.

We try to use honey in placement of sugar in everything we make and so far everything has turned out just fine. I’d encourage you to start using honey in recipes than sugar. Not only is it healthier but it does taste better.

Here’s our lemonade mix we concocted:

3/4 to 1 cup of honey
1 cup of lemon juice
5 1/2 cups of water
1 cup of ice

Just pour the lemon juice in a pitcher with the honey and stir until the honey has dissolved. It didn’t glop up too much and was fine after I had stirred it enough. Then add the water and ice afterwards. Enjoy!

Put anything extra in your lemonade? I once heard of putting vanilla and cinnamon in it, heating it up with the water and honey.

In Watching the Storm

~Journal entry from April 25, 2008~

I stayed up and watched a storm roll in this evening. When I stepped outside, I immediately was caught up in the expectant thrill that trembled in the sweltering air. Lightning lit up the sky to the North, illuminating the night with its flash. Thunder rumbled in the distance; far away it seemed, yet every moment it grew nearer. Like a symphony, the thunderstorm was gathering power, approaching the climax. Wind whipped through the trees, tangling their branches and wrenching them apart once more. The first few drops of rain were hurled upon the earth at the mercy of the ruthless wind. Soon they grew in size and number, and the lightning flashed forebodingly nearer, while the thunder was increased to a drumroll. Loath to go inside, I stayed until the wind threatened to pound the rain mercilessly into my face, though I stood under the eaves. Indoors, the volume was less, but still exciting. As the storm broke in its full force, releasing the storehouses of the clouds and filling the sky with brightness, I thought of the word 'awesome'. Awesome surely best describes this wonder of God's nature, yet how we abuse this word in our culture! Watching this storm gave me a sense of the true meaning, and I was filled with awe at the omnipotence of its Creator.

Turning back to the storm, I fixed my eyes on the heavens and anticipated the delightful shiver brought by each lightning flash. It illuminated a blue, mystical world, hazy and shadowed, with the rain falling in sheets and obscuring familiar landmarks. Hail was mingled with the rain, and added further to the magnificent volume. The thunder continued to rumble, seldom releasing its full potential, but threatening all the same. When it did crack, everything else, wind, rain, and hail, seemed to hush for a moment, intimidated, and then resume louder than before.

Now there is a quiet lull, yet it is just as beautiful. It is as if it was a movement in a symphony, written for effect. Don't we wish our human composers could dream up something even close to being as wonderful! But nothing can equal God as a Master Musician, God as an artist, God as an author. We try and we fail. But, ever gracious, He is always there, revealing His glorious works of art just when we need to see them. And in seeing them, we see Him. For He is ever present in creation, in history, in our lives.

This made me think of some amazing verses from Job. I love that book, it is so encouraging and it makes me feel very small and insignificant. (Which I need sometimes!)

~~~~~~~~
"Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail, which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war?
What is the way to the place where the light is distributed, or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth?"
"Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain and a way for the thunder bolt, to bring rain on the land where no man is, on the desert in which there is no man, to satisfy the waste and desolate land, and to make the ground sprout with grass?"
"Has the rain a father, or who has begotten the drops of dew? From whose womb did the ice come forth, and who has given birth to the frost of heaven?
The waters become hard like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen."
"Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that a flood may cover you?
Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go, and say to you, 'Here we are'?
Who has put wisdom in the inward parts or given understanding to the mind?
Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens, when the dust runs into a mass and the clods stick together?"
"Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it."
Excerpts from Job 38.
Amazing, isn't it? That the God who is the Lord of the storm, of the heavens, of the earth, of all creation, all that is seen and all that is invisible; that He should stoop to raise me up with His right hand! That He should consent, should invite me to serve Him, to be His forever! I will never understand. It is altogether beyond my power to comprehend. I can only worship Him with my whole heart, and offer up to Him the only thing which I have to give: myself.
Apples & Apple Dip - Dippin' With Some Fun
We use this recipe a lot whenever Dad brings home some big juicy apples. It's great if you are going to have a cookout, or having a get-together, or if just want to enjoy a little sweet, but healthy treat with your family. It takes hardly anything to make, and it so good, you'll want to make it again!
The Dippin' Dip
3/4 cup of sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 (8-ounce) package of cream cheese
1/4 cup of chopped nuts (walnuts work best in this)
about a tablespoon of vanilla
Now, if you have let the cream cheese sit out, you can do this with your hand, but if not, you can put it in the electric mixer and do it.
Put the cream cheese in a bowl, and start mashing it with the fork. Or if you are using a mixer, do it on low speed. Next pour the sugar in, one at a time, mixing it well before adding the next. Next you mix the vanilla in. That way it's a little bit softer. Now the last thing is to put the nuts in. Now mix all that up really good, making sure the sugars have not clumped anywhere. There's your apple dip.
I want to let you know something - if you are having a get-together and want this to be a part of the food, and you are making it ahead of time, do not cut the apples too. They will turn brown. It won't hurt if you do, but if you don't have to, make sure they are freshly cut.
Now, time to cut the apples. My favourite way to cut them is with a sharp knife. But if you do this, ask an adult to help you with this. If not, and you have an apple-corer on hand, use that. It will be quick to use it.
Once, you have done this, you are finished! Now, you can place the bowls of apples and apple dip on the table and set out some plates for people to come and get their own. Hope you enjoy this as much as we do. When we make, it doesn't last very long once you get the Littles started!
The Shed
The Shed
By Eliza, age 14 - Featuring artwork by her sister, Kate, age 18
There it stood
Unnoticed by passerbys
Ignored by humankind
A haven from this world
There she stood
A pencil in her hand
A searcher of beauty
Hand aching for grace
There she found it
In that small, neglected shed
A grace like no other
A charm never before
There she waited
Contemplating
Fingers fiddling the pencil in her hand
Oh, how to capture it!
There she sat
One moment sketching
The next unmoving
Always creating
There she stood
A smile on her face
Grace, charm
She had done it
There it stood
Unnoticed by passerbys
Ignored by humankind
A haven from this world
The 20 Day Prayer Challenge
Miss Jocelyn and I (Miss Kylie, the editor of KoF) decided to host a 20 Day Prayer challenge, which we hope you'll partake in. I wrote an article awhile back on the importance of prayer, and we hope this will start a movement that does bring the Christians to their knees in prayer.
The Bible says in Matthew 17:20 that if you simply have faith has big as a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, you can move a mountain. Prayer can make an impact in everyone's life. The Bible also says that Satan has to flee at the mention of the name of Jesus, and he knows prayer is a weapon he can't fight. Unfortunately many have truly gone blind to how powerful prayer is. We really want to encourage people, especially kids, to learn the power of prayer and to pray more.
The Bible is full of verses in regards to praying to the Lord and prayer does change things. In Philippians 4:6 it says "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God."
The Word says to pray, pray, pray, and that's what we want to do! We want to challenge you to take the next 20 days and pray for one country. Whether it's America or Africa or India. We also liked to encourage you to make a list of different things about that country that you're going to pray for, and also make a "Prayer Log" what you pray for each day.
Some key things you might pray for:
-God's Word would reach the people
-The people would accept it
-The salvation of the people
-The leadership of the country
-The false religions to fail
We don't want to make this challenge a chore so please don't do this just for show. We want you to do this with a willing and loving heart towards those who are lost. We want Prayer Warriors who will be diligent in praying for those who need Jesus. The Bible says that when just one person comes to Christ all the angels celebrate.
P.U.S.H. Pray Until Something Happens
The challenge will start on Thursday May 1st, which is the National Day of Prayer. From then until later this month, we hope you'll pick a country you'd like to spend the next 20 days praying for (along with specific things about that country to pray for) and post about it on May 1st. Please just leave a comment if you're going to join us in this fight against the forces of evil, or sign the Mr. Linky.
You're also welcome to take one of the 20 Days Of Prayer icon and put it on your site!
The Importance of Prayer
The Importance of Prayer
by Elisabeth B.
We need to be fighting for America. Although some of us aren’t able to fight physically, we can still pray. Even at a young age, we should be prayer warriors and spiritual defenders of our nation. Sadly, in this fast-paced world, not many people pray on a daily basis. If we all started praying daily, can you imagine how powerful that could be, not to mention how much it could do?
Now, I know you probably struggle with finding time to pray. I know I do. Here are some suggestions that may work:
- While you’re in bed, waiting to fall asleep
- While you’re doing your chores
- While you’re getting ready (either in the morning or at night)
- A spare moment in between subjects at school
Actually, it doesn’t matter where you pray. God can hear you anywhere, so why worry about it? Also, it doesn’t have to be long and complicated. Just a few, simple words are fine.
You might also struggle with what to pray for. Here are some things you can pray for:
- President Bush & the other leaders of our country. Pray that they would have wisdom in making the right decisions.
- The soldiers that are fighting in Iraq. Pray for protection, strength, and courage for these brave young men and women and their families.
- The 9/11 victims’ families. Pray that they would have comfort, and, if they don’t know Jesus, that God would send the right people into their lives to share Him with them.
- For the continued safety, protection, and future of our nation.
Here are some Bible verses that can encourage you to pray:
Psalm 4:3
Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself;
the LORD will hear when I call to him.
1 Kings 8:45
then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause
Psalm 6:9
The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer.
Psalm 121:1-2
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Let's start showing Satan how we can fight - let's PRAY!! You never know what a couple words can do!
Red Marbles
RED MARBLES
I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprising a basket of freshly picked green peas. I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.
"Hello Barry, how are you today?"
"H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas. They sure look good."
"They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?"
"Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time."
"Good. Anything I can help you with?"
"No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas."
"Would you like to take some home?" asked Mr. Miller.
"No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with."
"Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?"
"All I got's my prize marble here."
"Is that right? Let me see it" said Miller.
"Here 'tis.. She's a dandy."
"I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?" the store owner asked.
"Not zackley
but almost."
"Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble" .
Mr. Miller told the boy.
"Sure will.. Thanks Mr. Miller."
Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me. With a smile she said, "There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store."
I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved toColorado, but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.
Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could
Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts....all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket.
Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.
Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband's bartering for marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.
"Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim "traded" them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size....they came to pay their debt."
"We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world," she confided, "but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho ."
With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.
The Moral : We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds. Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath.
A bit of advice
Here is a bit of advice from one of my friends.
"If you struggle with something in your life, trust in the Lord always. I am in tenth grade and have been struggling with eye surgeries ever since sixth grade. You might say, "Wow. I could never do that." I tell you that the Lord helped me through this situations. I could have never done it without him. My advice to you is if you are struggling with something then go to God."
Exactly. God will help you through whatever your going through--no problem is too big or too small for Him. Trust Him--he'll be there for you.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
